Do Endurance Athletes Need Magnesium Supplements?
Magnesium is an important mineral that aids endurance athletes with many functions related to performance and injury prevention. It helps aids with bone and muscle recovery, muscle and nerve function (which impacts technique), prevents muscle cramps (if cramps are induced by lack of magnesium) and provides fuel for energy production.
Examples of symptoms of low magnesium include: heavy legs (lack of energy production), fatigue, cramps, tight and sore muscles, impaired recovery, difficulty sleeping, and restless leg syndrome.
The Signs and symptoms of low magnesium can mimic other issues athletes may have. As such, it's important to consult your health care provider to decide if you need a magnesium supplement and what form of the supplement might work best for you.
