What is the ‘Red Zone’ in Triathlon and why does it matter?
The ‘Red Zone’ is what Liz calls the chunk of time during a triathlon that includes the last 30-60 minutes of the bike, T2, and the first 20-30 minutes of the run. This period during a race has a lot happening and we also may be starting to get tired. It’s easy for athletes to lose focus and forget to manage their pacing, nutrition, and cooling strategies. This can cause problems later in the run because we’ve (accidentally) gone an ~ hour in the middle of our race forgetting to manage pacing, cooling, and nutrition. Following the plan is simple but it’s definitely not easy. For a greater chance at success, we practice things over and over in training so it becomes habitual.
