What is a Race Plan and Why do Endurance Athletes Need One?
A race plan is a document an athlete and coach write together to help an athlete prepare for race day. It includes things like race logistics, gear lists, nutrition plans, pacing plans, and mental preparation. It includes all aspects of race week in efforts to help athletes prepare to handle race day with calm focus even in the midst of challenges.
There is no right way to do a race plan. The goal is to help athletes prepare for their race in the way that works for them. "Race brain" is real meaning we often get loopy once we arrive on sight for a big race. A race plan helps us keep a calm focus before and during our race.
Practice, practice, practice during training is a key first step toward setting yourself up for a successful race day. The race plan is about writing down what you've practiced over and over again as a way to help race week and race day go smoothly. Remember, race day is JAW - just another workout - and a race plan helps us stay focused under the stress that comes with performance.
