Should Endurance Athletes Get Hydration IV Infusion BEFORE a Race?

What is this episode about?

INTRO 0-5:12

Liz is getting ready for the Reds Boulder Training Camp in July.

Should athlete’s get a Hydration IV before a race?

Access to Hydration IVs before races are becoming increasingly available but they aren’t a good idea. Here are Amy's reasons for not getting an IV:

  • Puts athletes at risk for hyponatremia (too much water and not enough electrolytes).

  • IV solutions aren't regulated so you can't be sure of what you're getting (in fact, they are banned by the world doping agency).

  • Some IV drips contain pain relievers which are not good to be taking while racing.

What should you do instead?

The few days before your race, sip on water and electrolytes throughout the day.  This way you are using products your body is familiar and happy with PLUS you are taking in fluids at a rate you can absorb!
