What is Functional Threshold Power and How do we Use it?
Functional Threshold Power (FTP) is the estimated power an athlete can hold for an hour on the bike. It's important because it helps us understand training zones and make decisions about training.
Power is measured in watts and is a measure of how much power the legs can push (i.e. leg strength on the bike). Note: It is not a measurement of speed.
Athletes sometimes place too much emphasis on this number and forget the practical way we use it to make training decisions. It's not the FTP number that's important - it's knowing how to use this number practically in training to get you race ready.
