Why do Athletes Slap their Muscles before they Race?

Slapping, tapping, or scratching (careful with the scratching!) activiates mechanoreceptors. These are nerves close to the surface of the skin and help activate muscles.  This is a type of warm up and can be used before a workout or even during some of those workouts we all have where we just feel flat. If you get going and don't feel great after a warm up period, stop and do some light tapping or slapping on the skin to help bring the muscles on line.
